Entry #3

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.
Color works hand in hand with light to create many different wavelengths. I would say that color can be defined as a set of hues. In different settings colors can be seen differently due to intensity(how bright or dull) and value(how light or dark). Color plays a huge role in human emotion as seen in the video the color red evoked some kind of confidence and radiated "champion" vibes so automatically judges would have picked the contestant dressed in red over the one dressed in blue even if their performance wasn't up to par. Another of how color can have a play on emotion is how around now ( Valentine's Day ) we see a lot of red and red would signify love and romance for people. It makes people feel the romance in the air. Yellow is often associated with happiness, however in other cultures yellow could mean something opposite to happiness, or something completely different. In conclusion, color can have a strong effect on emotions.
2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
In probably every beginner art class we are taught the color theory and also basic things such as the color wheel. The theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues me is the fact that we might look at a color and perceive it one way, but someone right next to us could look at it a completely different way. And there could be many reasons why they do: cultural, maybe they have extra color receptors, maybe the way the light is reflecting looks different at certain angles. Another thing that interests me is how people come to associate specific colors with something for example, red means stop, green means go, and yellow usually means caution. Red is the universal stop sign, however, I still can't put my finger on where other people would get the other color associations from. I'm thinking green is across from red on the color wheel so that's why if red must be stop then green must mean go for people. The fact that color is merely a reflection of light is really cool.
3. In the video, what made the biggest impression on you in regards to color and Why?
The thing that made the biggest impression on me regarding color is how our brains have a huge connection to color. As learned in my sensation and perception class and also talked about in this video, our ganglion cells, located in our occipital lobe (in charge of sight) plays a huge role in color perception. The photosensitive ganglion cell is quite intriguing because these ganglions regulate different parts of the brain. This cell in charge of waking us up had a sensitivity to one wavelength of light and that was blue(a short wavelength). This is something that I did not know so it was nice to learn. Another interesting thing was the monkeys learning color and then connecting color to different foods to then feel an emotion when associating that food to that specific color.
