Entry #10: Mask Making

1. Upload the three (3) inspiration images to your Blog. Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces.
This mask was colorful and had so much expression. I liked the detail in the mouth where the teeth are really white and short. Overall I feel like the color is what drew me. The fact that this looks like some kind of colorful demon was also intriguing and cool because demons and devils are usually seen as dark creatures, and these colors bring life to this mask.

This mask intrigued me because it reminded me of a Caribbean parade called Labor Day that is celebrated annually. It is apart of my culture and I love it. The colors are beautiful, the detailed rhinestones add flare, and extra things added makes the mask pop out even more. The feathers are beautiful and I just love it.

I'm so in tune with the Japanese culture and I found this mask super cool because it reminded me of something straight out of an anime show. The teeth poking out looked cool and the expression makes us know that this demon is really upset.

2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces.
Inspo 1: There is definitely emphasis put on the eyes in this piece. It is very colorful and it looks dilated, we can see the different layers of color and then finally the pupil in the center that's a small dot. The teeth are really bold, short, and white. The mouth is spread as wide as possible into a grin we know this because of the red surrounding the teeth. This mask is really colorful and the horns are dark with a hint of orange. It looks like there are wings on the sides of the head and there is an intricate pattern on each.

Inspo 2: There are rhinestones on this mask and contrast of light yellow and dark orange. There are triangular shapes and some symmetry going on in this mask where it splits down the middle. There are big fluffy white and orange feathers that add final touches to the mask.

Inspo 3: This mask is blue with an emphasis on the facial expression because of the curved eyebrows and big uncertain eyes. The mouth is wide open with teeth coming out of it. This work has high plum cheekbones that give the face more of a shape. The white/greyish hair it has is wild and scattered.

3. Upload images of your thumbnail sketches and finished piece.
sn: this sketch looks ugly :(                                                    Finished Mask

4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.
I definitely used contrast in my finished mask because I chose to make one side of the mask darker than the other side which appears to be lighter to represent the two sides of love-- dark side and light side. The tears on the dark side are blue for sorrow and sadness. The tears on the light side are yellow for joy and happiness. I also used shape by creating heart-shaped eyes and a heart-shaped mouth to emphasize that this mask is one of love. Form because this mask is a three-dimensional mask (somewhat). Balance because the mask is symmetrical.

5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.
Creating a mask was stressful at first. I literally had no paper mache or anything. I had to get really creative and in the end, I felt like my mask turned out pretty okay and was not a complete fail on my part. I did not need paper mache or all of the extras that I was stressing about because I thought I needed it, I just simply watched a youtube video on how to bend and manipulate paper to make a mask and that worked out in my favor. I already had acrylic paint so designing the mask wasn't so hard. I used the eye glitter that I use for my makeup to put final touches on it and I love it.
