Entry 5: Project II Art Gallery Visit #1

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
One artwork that made an impression on me was Group, by Hannah Samuels. In this piece, there are many people huddled up hugging each other. This embrace was very heartfelt. It shows that you should appreciate the people around you because they won't be here forever. In my psychology of death and dying class, and my philosophy- The meaning of life class, I am learning that time is really precious and we should live life to the fullest and not take things or people in your life for granted because we never really know when it's our turn to go.
Another artwork that made an impression on me was Western New York, by James D. Havens. In this piece, we see beautiful clouds, nice green pastures, and a man riding two horses. This painting was pleasing to look at. I enjoyed how well the colors fit together. I am from New York City where the city line is my view and it is the most beautiful view to me, especially at night time. Although that is my favorite view, this painting made me realize that a mountainscape can be just as beautiful.
B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
One artwork that I felt a connection to was Fire, Holland, NY,1947, by Robert Blair. In this piece, there is fire and destruction. The trees lost its leaves and life and the fire is slowly engulfing everything. I felt a connection to this because this is how I feel inside when I am angry. There is this fire in me that destroys everything when I let it out. Looking at this painting showed me that the fire can spread afar if it is not put out in time. And anger can take someone in a dark place if not helped in time it can lead to self-destruction.

Another artwork that I felt a connection to was The Spirit of Niagara, by Evelyn Rumsey Cary. In this piece there is a woman figure that makes up the Niagara waterfall, her crown is a rainbow, and she gracefully parts her arms as the water flows down. This painting was peaceful to look at. I love the sight and sound of water it relaxes me. The rainbow in the background also gives a sense of peace because of its beautiful colors. The rainbow also gives me a sense of identity being apart of the LGBTQ community.
C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
One artwork that I would love to know more about is Horror, by William Ehrich. In this piece, there is a woman in a dress holding her face and tilting her head. This almost replicates the painting "Scream". I would like to know what is terrorizing this woman, what is it that she is witnessing for her to have such angst. Is this internal pain or external pain that she is feeling?
Another artwork that I would love to know more about is Adam and Eve: Oxunmare, by Abdias do Nascimento. In this piece, there are two nude African Americans joining hands that appears to morph into one. One person is a male who is holding a bird in his other hand and the other being a female holding a butterfly which appears to be apart of her hand. The atmosphere seems calm and peaceful. This was pleasing to view because there was never really a peaceful time for African Americans throughout history and this painting gives them a slight chance to be at peace. I would love to know why did the artist choose this depiction instead of another one to show the discrimination going on in Brazil? People who are not in Brazil may have wanted to see what was going on there.

Comments

  1. We chose a lot of the same pieces. I really liked the Western New York one and the Spirit of Niagara. I really like those ones because they are so creative and beautiful. Spirit of Niagara is so creative with the way the clouds are coming out of her head and she looks like an angel with wings.

  2. I find it really interesting seeing the pictures that stood out to other people. Some being similar to my choice of pictures, such as the Spirit of Niagara while others being completely left field. I enjoyed your use of including more than one sculpture piece, causing people to think more internally about the art.

  3. I also chose to visit the Burchfield Penney Art Center and I really enjoyed it. I think it was so interesting that the artists were local whether they were born here in Buffalo or lived here at some point in their lives. I didn't know that prior to visiting. I like the description you gave as to why you felt a connection to "Fire, Holland, NY 1947." I also saw that piece during my visit and agree that it definitely emits a feeling of anger.

  4. I also visited Burchfield and found that we had taken pictures of similar or the same works. I have never gone to an art gallery purely to look before-it has always been for an event or something of the sort, so going for a class project was really quite cool. You explained each of the questions in depth and provided great explanations as to why you wanted to know more, why it intrigued you, etc.
